The Truth About Aluminium and Rust

The Truth About Aluminium and Rust Here at ABC Industrial we sell a large range of high quality aluminium rollers shutters and our emergency call out service is often requested to deal with the maintenance or fixtures on the same type of metal. Unfortunately what we find is that a large majority of the population do not recognise some of the most important signs of damage to their roller shutters. In fact, many confuse rust with corrosion! Here is everything you need to know to keep your roller shutters in tip top condition… It is not uncommon to find that people use the terms ‘corrosion’ and ‘rust’ interchangeably when they are in fact not the same thing. After all, the science side of things tell us quite a different story since corrosion occurs when a chemical reaction causes metal to wear away and rust is a type of corrosion that takes place when water or moisture is able to oxidise metals like iron or steel. Due to this, it is easy to see that aluminium does not actually rust because it does not contain either of these two metals. What actually happens to aluminium is down to the corrosion that takes place when the metal is exposed to weathering and oxygen. The science term for this is oxidation however that is for the experts to know! This process causes the aluminium to build a thin layer of a chemical compound called aluminium oxide on top of the metal in order to try and prevent further damage from the corrosion. In fact, this process is actually quite clever as it prevents the aluminium from suffering more damage at the hands of corrosion because the oxidation is creating a barrier. In order for further corrosion to take place, the oxide has to be removed,. This is also another way that corrosion differs from rust because rust cannot be chipped away from the surface with such ease. Being able to recognise the signs of damage is one of the most important aspects of roller shutter maintenance. After all, how can you get the full potential out of them if they are only working to half of their possible efficiency or are extremely damaged?! In order to find out more information about aluminium corrosion and our roller shutter repairs, get in contact with a member of the ABC team today - we would be happy to assist however we can!
