3 Internal Fire Door Rules

Every public building is required to have high-quality internal and external fire doors installed by law. After all, they can save countless lives during even the most devastating fires. Here at ABC Industrial, we have a wide range of heavy-duty-steel fire doors available as single, double or leaf and half door sets that can be rated for up to 240 minutes of protection. With this said, it is important to ensure that you use and look after a fire door properly. Read on as we go through 3 internal fire door rules to follow…
  1. Always close fire doors behind you

If you have ever opened a door and wondered why it was so heavy, it is probably because it was a fire door. After all, they are designed to be heavy so that they will close themselves. Unfortunately, people will prop open fire doors or install a latch that hooks to the wall which can be incredibly dangerous. After all, fire doors have to be closed in order to be effective against the wrath of a fire, so if one was to break out, an open fire door would be useless. As a result, you should always ensure that they are closed.
  1. Maintenance and inspections are compulsory

Similarly, it is important to ensure that your fire door is effective against a fire by carrying out inspections on a regular basis. By spotting any problematic areas early and having them dealt with as soon as possible, you can rest assured that your fire door will serve its purpose in the event of a fire. In fact, fire door maintenance and servicing are legal requirement.
  1. Never open a door during an active fire

A fire door has an expanding seal around the edges that is activated during a fire and this allows the fire to be compartmentalised for a set amount of time (usually between 30 and 240 minutes) in order to allow people to evacuate. This starves the fire of oxygen and can make it easier for the fire department to put out. As a result, it is imperative that you never open a fire door that is containing an active fire as this will give it access to fresh oxygen, causing the flames to intensify or worse, lead to an explosion. We believe that fire door safety is something that everyone should know. After all, it is now possible to purchase fire doors for residential properties too. Since we specialise in industrial security solutions and all of our doors are manufactured in the UK, the ABC team also offer an unparalleled industry lead time of 10-12 working days from the day you make your purchase.
