Fixing a Squeaky Door Hinge

Fixing a Squeaky Door Hinge

Whilst there are much more serious issues that an industrial door could present, a squeaky hinge has got to be right up there with the most annoying. After all, there is little danger with this problem however the cause of the issue is not always apparently. In order to ensure that everybody on location stays sane, the team here at ABC Industrial have decided to go over some of the most popular methods for fixing a squeaky hinge…

Oil

Most of the time a hinge will start to squeak due to a lack of lubrication as the metal parts start to grind against one another every time the door is opened and closed. The oiling method means that you don’t have to bother removing the pin as you are simply providing that much needed lubrication and you may even be able to get enough oil inside the hinge without having to remove the door from the frame. If this doesn’t work, try removing the pin with a hammer and rail punch and repeat the method.

Paraffin Wax

As a wax that is usually found in candles, paraffin can actually be bought raw from many crafting stores. The best thing is that it is white and odourless which makes this method much more desirable. After all, the last thing you want to do is get rid of that pesky squeak and be left with a dreadful smell. Simply melt the wax carefully and drop the hinge pins in the hot wax just like you would do with the oil. Once the wax has cooled, pop the hinges back in and the squeak should be gone!

Steel Wool

One of the major causes of industrial door squeaking comes down to dirt and rust that has been left to build up on the hinges. Luckily, steel wool can fix that problem if the oil or wax fails to work. After all, the hinge could just need a good clean! In fact, if you notice that the pin is covered in gunk or is discoloured then you may want to try the steel wool first.
